détournement: nietzsche family circus
from the wiki
In détournement, an artist reuses elements of well-known media to create a new work with a different message, often one opposed to the original. The term “détournement”, borrowed from the French, originated with the Situationist International
the family circus and nietzsche meld is randomized, but consistently brilliant. clicky.
here’s a détourned blondie comic that explains détourning! clicky.
finally, a treat called “can dialectics break bricks” which we’ve watched on video for years. it’s a détourned martial arts film that now focuses on socio-political critique. it’s absurd, very smart and so very funny.
one of my favorite scenes: over a dozen young and talented marshal artists in a courtyard, showing their skills, high kicking, breaking stuff with their hands and faces, jumping around expertly. their teacher approaches the front of the group, who fall into formation to listen to his wisdom. he looks to them knowingly and says “i would like you to remember that my karate teacher died of a bullet in the head.”
i love this film. and, now that we live in the future, you can read about it, or even watch it on the internets.
<thanks for the comic link, collin!>
