geek + whimsy + upcycle = obviousfront’s captivating sculptures and wearable art. he’s been at this since 1982 and we are all so lucky.
apologies: i bought a couple of pieces before i posted this, for fear that you’d steal my favorites out from under me. luckily, obviousfront is pretty prolific, so there’s so much more to be had…at amazingly affordable prices. clicky.
i like bugs and so i often use the google to learn about them. i’ve been on a caterpillar jag for a while now. today i found this photo essay of the cecropia silk moth (hyalaphora cecropia) evolving from tiny egg to big fat pupa to big fuzzy moth. very simply done and explained, but i felt like i was watching a suspensful movie.
i love portland and i’m finally gonna get a chance to play with the kick ass artists at crafty wonderland this sunday, october 14.
i’ve heard fantastic things about the creative, warm and friendly community that cathy and torie have helped to cultivate.
it must be pretty cool, because some of my favorite seattle people will also be down there; markia and lindsey wil be working their urban craft uprising magics, and you don’t want to miss the hand painted textiles from rekoj design.
all that plus demian parker, one of my all time favorite people and a damn fine artist if i do say my damn self, lives down there…
i’m just thinking, if the portland craft community is as cool as i’ve heard, we might never come back. come say hi, ok? clicky.
it’s happening, people. the annual plushyou! show begins this friday night. plushyou! is a very large and very soft display of talent from all over the country. this year, the goods are so good that they’re not just being showcased at schmancy, but at fancy and pants too…aka: the trilogy of awesome.
i’m really excited to be a part of this show. my three needle felted sculptures will be at schmancy where kristen rask makes it all happen. she’s a talented artist too, and her book, “plush you!: lovable misfit toys to sew and stuff” is coming out any day now. i saw an advanced copy and it shines like gold.
anyway, the show starts friday, october 12 with a huge reception from 5pm to 9pm at all three shops (next to the moore theater). i’ll be there, gawking at the art and resisting the urge to ask the rock star artists to sign my rack…which is also pretty darn plushy indeed.
oh, if you’re grounded or something and can’t go to the opening, don’t worry. the show runs through november 19th.
